ANYwhere: Early Mornings

Early mornings aren’t for the weak. Heck, early mornings shouldn’t even be a thing, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I cannot get everything done in a day.

As I work to know my new community and become involved in ways that give me meaning, I have let a few things slip. In previous posts, I wrote about some of the goals I set for myself before I turned 30. Since then I have been working to “up my game” as an adult and professional.

This internal struggle of wanting to ‘up my game’ but continue to sleep 8 perfect hours a night has finally come to a head. So I’ve decided to just get up early. Most days I struggle with this notion of waking up before the sun is up, but everyone has to start somewhere.

After about a week, I started to hate less waking up early, and I think it is attributed to these three things.

1. Sleeping in your workout clothes – Yoga clothes are very comfortable! If I am already dressed to exercise, then I might as well get to the gym.

2. A good wake up alarm – I just started using the alarm called Barcode Alarm Clock. It is an annoying, yet effective alarm where you scan a barcode to set an alarm and you have to scan that same barcode to turn off your alarm. The idea is you scan a barcode not next to your bed so you physically have to get up to turn it off. If you are already up, then you might as well make it to the gym!

3. Accountability buddies – Everyone is trying to better themselves in some way. I like to tell different people my different goals, so its like I have a whole team helping me to keep motivated. You shouldn’t have one person be responsible for helping you achieve all your goals.

Like I said before, I constantly struggle with wanting to be a better person and just wanting to sleep past 8am

What are some ways you motivate yourself to accomplish your goals?

  1. It can be hard to get motivated sometimes. I never thought of sleeping in yoga clothes but it does make sense. I have my alarm clock set up across the room so I have to get out of bed to turn it off. One good way I found to motivate myself is to schedule the activity on my calendar. It seems to work pretty well.

  2. I never thought about sleeping in workout clothes. That is a really great idea (well, expect in the middle of summer). I may have to try that!

  3. I am so not a morning person, but I’ve run into a lifestyle where I work until 3am. It’s awful. I do, however, love the idea of sleeping in yoga clothes. They ARE cozy, but I never thought of using them as an excuse to work out first thing in the morning. I’m going to try that!

  4. Mornings is my favorite time of the day. It is quite and slow. I’m able to enjoy a cup of coffee before anyone wakes up. As for trying to keep up on my goals, I post a monthly goal sheet for myself on the wall next to my desk. I see it every single day to keep me focused on what I want to accomplish.
